The Access to Higher Education Diploma for Business is an Ofqual regulated qualification. It is an Applied General qualification which allows candidates to demonstrate key transferable academic and professional skills, numerical competency, and applied business knowledge, as well as an understanding of essential concepts related to economics, marketing, management, and finance.

Students must study the following five core units:
Study and Communication Skills – equips students with the essential academic skills needed to succeed at university level. Students will learn how to conduct independent research, write structured academic essays, deliver presentations, and engage with academic texts effectively.
Introduction to Business Studies – introduces students to key principles of business, including organisational structures, business environments, entrepreneurship, and the role of stakeholders. It forms the foundation for more in-depth study of business operations and strategy.
Economics – explores both microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts relevant to business contexts. Topics include supply and demand, market structures, fiscal policy, and the global economic environment. Students gain analytical skills essential for higher study in business and economics.
Marketing – focuses on the core principles of marketing, including the marketing mix, consumer behaviour, market research, and digital marketing strategies. Students are encouraged to apply theory to real-world marketing case studies.
Business Finance – introduces learners to fundamental financial principles. Topics include budgeting, financial planning, interpreting financial statements, and understanding business costs and revenues. Students develop financial literacy and numeracy skills crucial for any business role.
For entry onto the Access to Higher Education Diploma for Business, students must meet the following entry requirements:
Be aged 19 or over at the start of the course.
Have completed GCSE/IGCSE ‘O’ Levels or an equivalent* qualification in their own country and passed 5 subjects with minimum grades of ‘C’, ‘4’, or equivalent* in each. These should include Mathematics and English.
Have a valid score of 5.5 or above in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination or equivalent for students whose first language is not English. Alternatively, students can take a free English placement test administered by the accredited delivery centre.
*Centres need to provide evidence to justify any equivalency decision (both qualification equivalency and grade equivalency) they make pertaining to any enrolments via non-GCSE or non-standard routes.
