Access to Higher Education Diploma for Radiography

  • The Access to Higher Education Diploma for Radiography is a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification regulated by Ofqual. It is an Applied General qualification designed to equip learners with the academic knowledge, practical understanding, and core skills required to progress to a degree in Radiography or other allied health professions.

    In addition, successful candidates will fulfil the main entry requirements for many radiography and health sciences degree programmes across the UK. The course also provides a solid foundation for those who wish to seek employment or training within the healthcare sector.

Students must study the following core units:

Study and Communication Skills – equips students with the fundamental study skills required for success at university level. Topics include academic writing, note-taking, referencing, and presentation skills. Emphasis is placed on the ability to work independently and communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms.

Human Biology – provides an in-depth understanding of human body systems relevant to radiography. Students will study anatomy, physiology, cell biology, and disease processes, focusing on the impact of medical imaging techniques on diagnosis and treatment.

Physics for Radiography – introduces essential physics concepts required in radiographic practice. Topics include radiation physics, principles of X-rays, electromagnetic spectrum, and radiation safety. This unit prepares learners for the technical demands of a radiography degree.

Health and Wellbeing – explores a range of issues affecting physical and mental health. Topics include public health, health promotion, lifestyle factors, and the social determinants of health. The unit helps students appreciate the wider context in which healthcare professionals operate.

Radiography Practice and Principles – provides a foundation in radiographic techniques, patient care, ethical considerations, and professional responsibilities. It includes an overview of diagnostic imaging modalities and the role of radiographers in modern healthcare.

For entry onto the Access to Higher Education Diploma for Radiography, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be aged 19 or over at the start of the course.

  • Demonstrate a satisfactory level of English and Mathematics, ideally with GCSE Grade C/4 or equivalent in both subjects.

  • Have a valid score of 5.5 or above in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination or equivalent if English is not the first language.

  • Applicants may be required to complete a written assessment or attend an interview as part of the admissions process.

Centres must retain documentation that verifies the entry qualifications and suitability of all students admitted to the programme.


 

Students who complete the Access to Higher Education Diploma for Radiography can:

  • Apply to a wide range of UK universities to study Radiography or related health science degrees.

  • Meet the academic entry requirements for Diagnostic and Therapeutic Radiography programmes accredited by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

While this qualification is primarily designed as a route to higher education, it may also support applications for entry-level healthcare roles such as:

  • Radiography Assistant

  • Imaging Department Support Worker

  • Medical Imaging Administrator

  • Clinical Support Assistant

  • Healthcare Assistant in NHS or private practices
