Students must study the following five core units:
Study Skills – equips learners with the academic skills necessary to thrive in higher education. Topics include referencing, essay writing, critical thinking, presentation skills, and time management.
Introduction to Psychology – provides an overview of the field of psychology, covering major psychological perspectives such as behaviourism, cognitive psychology, and humanistic psychology.
Psychological Research Methods – introduces students to the principles and methods used in psychological research. Students will learn about experimental and non-experimental designs, ethical considerations, and how to analyse and interpret data.
Social and Developmental Psychology – explores theories of social behaviour and development across the lifespan. Topics may include attachment, identity, group dynamics, and social influence.
Biological and Cognitive Psychology – examines the relationship between the brain and behaviour. Topics include memory, perception, learning, neuropsychology, and the biological bases of mental health disorders.
For entry onto the Access to Higher Education Diploma for Psychology, students must meet the following criteria:
A minimum of GCSE/IGCSE ‘O’ Levels or an equivalent* qualification in their own country, with passes in 5 subjects at grade ‘C’, ‘4’ or equivalent*. These should include English and preferably Mathematics.
A valid IELTS score of 5.5 or above, or an equivalent English language qualification, for learners whose first language is not English.
Alternatively, learners can take the English Language Proficiency Test offered by the college or centre delivering the diploma.
This course is ideal for students aged 19 and above who are returning to education and preparing for university-level study.
*Centres must provide supporting documentation to verify any equivalency decision (qualification or grade) for enrolments via non-standard routes.
Students who successfully complete the Access to Higher Education Diploma for Psychology may:
Apply for a wide range of university programmes in psychology or related fields.
Gain direct entry into undergraduate degrees at many UK universities, subject to meeting individual institution requirements.
