Access to Higher Education Diplomas for Health Professions

The Access to Higher Education Diplomas for Health Professions is an Ofqual-regulated qualification. It is an Applied General qualification designed to equip students with the core knowledge, academic skills, and subject-specific competencies required to pursue a career in health-related professions. The course is specifically developed for individuals who wish to enter healthcare education but may not possess traditional A-Level qualifications.

In addition, successful candidates will fulfil the main entry requirements for a wide range of degree-level programmes in health and social care, including nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and radiography. This qualification also opens up opportunities for employment in the health and social care sector.

Students must study the following five core units:

Study and Communication Skills – Equips students with the essential academic skills required for success at university level. Students will learn how to conduct independent research, structure academic writing, deliver presentations, and critically engage with scholarly materials.

Health Studies – Provides an overview of the healthcare system, professional practice, and the roles and responsibilities of healthcare professionals. This unit encourages reflection on ethical principles and professional conduct.

Human Biology – Covers the structure and function of the human body, including major systems such as cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive. Students will gain insight into homeostasis, cell biology, and human development.

Psychology for Health – Introduces psychological concepts relevant to healthcare settings. Topics include theories of development, mental health, stress and coping mechanisms, and communication in care environments.

Mathematics for Health Professionals – Reinforces core mathematical principles needed in healthcare contexts, including dosage calculations, interpreting data, and using statistics in health-related research.

For entry onto the Access to Higher Education Diplomas for Health Professions qualification, students must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Be aged 19 or over at the start of the course.

  • Hold GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics at grade C/4 or above.

  • Have a demonstrated interest in health and social care professions.

  • Non-native English speakers must have a valid score of 5.5 or above in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination or equivalent. Alternatively, students may take a placement test administered by the centre.

The Access to Higher Education syllabus and assessment is suitable for adult learners aiming to transition into higher education.

Students that complete the Access to Higher Education Diplomas for Health Professions can:

  • Enrol onto degree-level qualifications in Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and other health-related programmes offered by UK universities.
