Level 1 Award in Understanding Safeguarding in Education and Childcare Settings

Aims of the course

These are to:

• Provide learners with an introduction to safeguarding in educational and childcare settings.
• Understand key safeguarding legislation, frameworks, and codes of practice.
• Recognise signs and indicators of different types of abuse.
• Understand the responsibilities of practitioners and procedures for reporting concerns.
• Learn the importance of maintaining confidentiality and acting in the best interests of the child.
• Develop awareness of how to promote the wellbeing of children and young people.

Objectives of the course

The objectives of these qualifications are to:

• • • To develop learners’ awareness of safeguarding practices in childcare and education.

    • To help learners understand the importance of recognising signs of abuse and neglect.

    • To enable learners to identify relevant legislation and policies related to safeguarding.

    • To introduce the responsibilities of professionals when responding to safeguarding concerns.

    • To promote safe, secure, and inclusive environments for children and young people.

 Structure

To be awarded the Level 1 Award in Understanding Safeguarding in Education and Childcare Settings, learners must successfully complete the following mandatory unit.

How the course is delivered

This qualification is delivered via blended learning. Learners will have full access to an interactive Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), which includes learning materials, case studies, quizzes, presentations, and relevant safeguarding resources.
Online tutor support is available throughout the course, allowing learners to receive feedback, communicate with instructors, and submit assignments electronically. Face-to-face interactions may take place via video conferencing or classroom sessions.

Assessment

All units are internally assessed using a variety of methods. These may include written assignments, reflective statements, scenario-based questions, and portfolio evidence.

Opportunities For Progression

Learners could progress to the following qualifications:

• Level 2 qualifications in Childcare, Supporting Teaching and Learning, or Safeguarding

• Entry-level roles in nurseries, schools, or after-school clubs

• Volunteer or support positions in childcare, education, or community organisations.

Certification

After successful completion, learners will be awarded the OFQUAL recognised qualification – NCFE Level 1 Award in Understanding Safeguarding in Education and Childcare Settings.

Entry requirements

• This qualification is suitable for learners aged 16 or above. Learners should possess an appropriate level of English language, literacy and ICT skills to access learning materials and complete written assessments.
